Ask a kid to name the most famous Italian brainrot character and there is a good chance they will say Tung Tung Tung Sahur. The twist is that he is not Italian at all. He comes from a parallel trend in Indonesia, and once you know about it, a surprising amount of the “Italian” cast starts to make more sense.

Indonesian brainrot is a wave of AI-generated meme characters made by Indonesian creators in early 2025, known locally as “Anomali” characters: objects or animals with human features, strange names, mock-spooky lore and looping text-to-speech audio. Its best-known characters, Tung Tung Tung Sahur and Boneca Ambalabu, were later absorbed into the Italian brainrot cast.

What Indonesian brainrot actually is

The format will look very familiar. Wikipedia’s article on Tung Tung Tung Sahur describes the “Anomali AI character” trend as an Indonesian trend distinct from, but inspired by, the Italian brainrot style: absurd AI-generated beings with strange names, made-up lore and repetitive audio, usually anthropomorphic animals or objects with human features.

The word “anomali” is Indonesian for anomaly, and it sets the tone. Where Italian brainrot videos tend to sound like an over-excited opera announcer, the Indonesian ones often sound like a fake public warning. A deadpan voice explains that a strange creature has been spotted, and what it will do to you if you are not careful. It is campfire-story energy delivered by a robot narrator.

Know Your Meme describes the Indonesian characters as spin-offs of Italian brainrot made in another language, while Wikipedia calls the Anomali trend distinct from, yet inspired by, the Italian style. The cleanest way to think about it: two sibling trends that grew up at the same time, borrowed from each other constantly, and then got merged together by fans who did not care where anything came from.

The Indonesian brainrot characters you already know

Tung Tung Tung Sahur

The breakout star. According to Wikipedia, Indonesian TikTok creator Noxa made the character on 28 February 2025, a day before Ramadan began in Indonesia, and uploaded it as part of the Anomali trend. He is an anthropomorphic kentongan, a traditional wooden slit drum, carrying a bat or drumstick.

The name only makes sense with the cultural background. During Ramadan, Muslims eat a pre-dawn meal called sahur before the day’s fast, and Wikipedia’s article on the character explains that in Indonesia people have long been woken for it with drums, kentongan and other noise-making. “Tung tung tung” is the sound of that drum. The original caption, translated on Wikipedia, warns that if you are called for sahur three times and do not answer, the creature comes to your house. The full story, including which parts of the legend are invented, is in our Tung Tung Tung Sahur explainer.

Boneca Ambalabu

A frog fused with a car tyre, standing on human legs. Know Your Meme records it being posted to TikTok on 2 February 2025 and passing 7.7 million views within two months, and describes it as an Indonesian brainrot character. The original voiceover is in Indonesian and introduces it as an evil entity that has been terrorising people, which is the Anomali warning style in its purest form. Our Boneca Ambalabu guide covers what can and cannot honestly be said about its name.

Hotspot Bro

The one most Western fans have never heard of, and the funniest. Know Your Meme says TikToker @dytzz88 posted it on 8 March 2025: an AI image of a sad skeleton with a phone for a head, over an Indonesian text-to-speech rant. The voice warns you never to share your phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot with an “anomaly”, because it will burn through your data downloading YouTube videos, watching TikTok and downloading game updates. Know Your Meme reports the video passed 10 million views in under two weeks.

Hotspot Bro is a perfect example of how local the joke can be. Everyone in Indonesia knows the friend who always asks to borrow your hotspot. The meme turns that friend into a monster.

How Indonesian brainrot got folded into Italian brainrot

Timing did most of the work. Italian brainrot took off in January 2025 with Tralalero Tralala, per Wikipedia, and the main cast filled out over February and March, as our timeline of how Italian brainrot started shows. The Indonesian Anomali wave was peaking in exactly the same weeks.

The two formats were nearly identical: a ridiculous AI hybrid, a name you could chant, a synthetic narrator. Fans making compilations, quizzes and tier lists grabbed the best characters from both and put them under the bigger label. Wikipedia notes that Tung Tung Tung Sahur gained his initial popularity as part of the genre broadly called Italian brainrot, even though he is culturally Indonesian. By the time he showed up in Roblox’s Steal a Brainrot and as a Fortnite skin, almost nobody outside Indonesia was asking where he came from.

That is why our Italian brainrot characters roster includes characters that are not Italian. The fandom’s label stuck, so the list follows the fandom, but it is worth knowing the real family tree.

Why the difference matters

It is easy to shrug and call it all brainrot. Three reasons not to:

The jokes make more sense. Tung Tung Tung Sahur is not random. He is a joke about something millions of Indonesian families do every Ramadan. Knowing that turns a weird wooden man into a genuinely clever bit of local humour.

Credit goes to the right people. Indonesian creators made some of the most famous characters in the whole trend. Filing them all under “Italian” quietly erases that.

It shows how internet trends really travel. Brainrot was never one trend from one country. It was several local versions of the same idea, mixing on the same apps at the same time, with the biggest name winning the label.

Is Indonesian brainrot still going

As of October 2026, the Indonesian characters that crossed over live on mostly inside the Italian brainrot universe, in games and fan remixes. Wikipedia notes that Tung Tung Tung Sahur has stayed popular through ironic memes and game appearances (see the biggest Italian brainrot memes of 2026) even as the wider Italian brainrot wave has cooled. Hotspot Bro, being much more of an inside joke, mostly stayed at home.

The Anomali recipe is the same one every brainrot trend uses: take something everyday, give it a face and legs, give it a name you cannot forget. You do not have to be Italian or Indonesian to play. Rotino lets you merge any two things into a brand-new brainrot character in seconds, so your own local in-joke can be next.
