Almost every explainer you will find files tung tung tung sahur under Italian brainrot and stops there. That is where they get it wrong. The wooden guy with the bat is Indonesian, the words are Indonesian, and the joke only fully lands once you know what the drumming sound is for.

Tung tung tung sahur is an Indonesian AI-generated meme character: an anthropomorphic wooden slit drum carrying a stick or bat. “Tung tung tung” imitates the sound of drums beaten around neighbourhoods before dawn during Ramadan, and “sahur” is the pre-dawn meal Muslims eat before a day of fasting. The name is, roughly, the sound of a wake-up call.

What the words in tung tung tung sahur actually mean

Split the name in two and it stops being nonsense.

Sahur (also written suhoor) is the meal Muslims eat before sunrise during Ramadan, right before the day’s fast begins. It happens early, usually while it is still dark, which creates a very practical problem: somebody has to wake everyone up.

Tung tung tung is that somebody. Across Indonesia, communities have long used rhythmic drumming and noise-making to rouse the neighbourhood for sahur, done with drums, improvised containers, and a traditional bamboo-and-wood slit drum called a kentongan. The Straits Times documented the practice in 2018, well before any of this was a meme. “Tung tung” is straightforward onomatopoeia for the percussive knock those instruments make.

So the character is not saying anything. He is a sound effect that grew a face.

The full name Wikipedia lists is even longer than the one people use: Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Tung Sahur. Fans shortened it to TTT Sahur, Triple T, T³, or just Tung.

Who made it, and when

The first known post came from Indonesian TikTok creator @noxaasht (known as Noxa) on 28 February 2025, one day before Ramadan began in Indonesia that year. Know Your Meme’s archive of the original clip describes an AI-generated wooden figure holding a bat, and reports the video passed 31 million views and 2.4 million likes inside its first month.

It arrived as part of an Indonesian trend called “Anomali AI,” which runs parallel to Italian brainrot rather than inside it. Anomali characters are anthropomorphic animals or objects with human features, weird names, invented lore, and looping audio. If that sounds familiar, it should. The two trends were separately evolving toward the same thing at the same time, and Tung Tung Tung Sahur is the one that jumped between them. The Guardian covered the broader gen-alpha obsession with these characters in June 2025, by which point Tung had long outgrown the Ramadan context it was made for.

What he actually looks like

Strip away the fan art and the game skins and the core design is simple. He is a kentongan: a hollowed length of bamboo or wood, historically hung in villages, mosque compounds, and neighbourhood guard posts because its knock carried across a whole settlement without electricity. Give it eyes, a wide mouth, and stumpy arms and legs and you have the character.

The thing he carries is usually called a bat, and it functions like one in memes, but the object it is based on is the beater you actually hit a kentongan with. Different rhythms on a real kentongan meant different things: a slow beat during a night patrol meant all clear, a fast continuous beat meant fire, flood, or a thief. That range of meaning is genuinely part of why the character reads as ominous. The instrument was always a little bit alarming by design.

The scary story, and how much of it is real

Here is the part explainers usually repeat as fact.

The lore says that if you are called for sahur three times and do not answer, Tung Tung Tung Sahur comes to your house.

That line is real in one specific sense: it comes from the caption on the original video, translated as a warning about an anomaly that only appears at sahur. So it is not something fans made up later. But it is also not an Indonesian folk belief, not a traditional bogeyman, and not documented anywhere as a thing people actually told children before February 2025. It is fiction written by a creator to give an AI image a spooky frame, which is exactly what the whole genre does.

Everything past that caption, the powers, the rivalries, the family trees, the elaborate crossover storylines with other brainrot characters, is fan-written. There is no canon. Nobody owns the plot. Wikis will state these relationships in a confident encyclopedia voice, and that voice is doing a lot of work it has not earned.

Treating that distinction seriously is not being a buzzkill. It is the difference between knowing a joke and repeating one.

Where he turned up next

Tung Tung Tung Sahur outlasted the peak of the trend, mostly through absurdist shitposting and video game appearances, and those appearances got complicated.

He was added to the Roblox game Steal a Brainrot, then pulled from it in September 2025 after a licensing dispute involving Noxa and a Paris-based brand agency, as Polygon reported. Wikipedia’s entry on the game records him being added back at the end of November 2025. In April 2026 he also arrived in Fortnite as a cosmetic, part of a Brainrot bundle PCGamesN covered at the time, which fans received badly.

Underneath all of it sits a genuinely unresolved question. Critics and lawyers quoted in that coverage argue an AI-generated image may not qualify for copyright protection in the usual way, which makes “who owns Tung Tung Tung Sahur” a real legal argument and not a fandom one. As of July 2026 it has not been settled.

The short version

He is Indonesian. The name is a drum sound plus the word for the pre-dawn Ramadan meal. He was posted by @noxaasht on 28 February 2025. The three-calls story came from the original caption. Everything more elaborate than that is fan invention, and the fun is knowing which is which.

Once you can see the pattern (a real object, a sound, a rhythmic name, one line of invented menace), you start spotting it everywhere, including Tralalero Tralala, the blue shark in sneakers, and Trippi Troppi, the aquatic cat-fish hybrid.
